On the third day of AWS re:Invent 2021, Dr Swami Sivasubramanian took to the stage to delivery his keynote about all things data and machine learning.  Today the crowd were warmed up by dancing DJ Jen Lasher, who was very energetic for 8:30am!

After setting the scene with the explosion of both structured and unstructured data and the end to end data journey, Dr Sivasubramanian then went on to announce these new AWS services, features and initiatives.

1. Amazon DevOps Guru for RDS

Amazon DevOps Guru for RDS

Amazon DevOps Guru for RDS has been launched into general availability today.  DevOps Guru for RDS can automatically detect, diagnose and resolve had to find database related performance issues in minites not days.  DevOps Guru for RDS is informed by years of AWS operational excellence.  It can perform root cause analysis to recommend corrective actions, and can even autmatically remediate some issues.

2. Amazon RDS Custom Now Supports SQL Server

As of today, Amazon RDS Custom now supports SQL Server based applications.  RDS custom is a managed database service for customers requiring cusomizations of the database server operating system and database software.

3. DynamoDB Standard-Infrequent Access Table Class

DynamoDB Standard-Infrequent Access Table Class

DynamoDB Standard-Infrequent Access Table Class has been introduced into general availability today.  This new table class can reduce storage costs by up to 50%, while maintaining the same performance, durability, scaling and availability as standard DynamoDB tables.  DynamoDB users can switch between table classes at any time.

4. AWS Database Migration Service Fleet Advisor

AWS Database Migration Service Fleet Advisor

AWS Database Migration Service Fleet Advisor was launched into preview today.  This new tool can accelerate database migration with automated inventory and migration recommendations.

5. Amazon SageMaker Ground Truth Plus

Amazon SageMaker GroundTruth Plus

Amazon SageMaker Ground Truth Plus was launched into general availability today, enabling users to deliver high quality training datasets fast, and reduce their data labeling cost. Ground Truth Plus offers data labeling workflows, access to highly skilled data labelers, while decresing cost and increasing quality with machine learning techniques.

6. Amazon SageMaker Studio Notebook

Amazon SageMaker Studio Notebook was launched into general availability today.  SageMaker Studio Notebook enables users to spin up a notebook, connect to data sources, write code to access data & perform queries, and create & deploy their machine learning models.

7. Three New Amazon SageMaker Infrastructure Innovations

Three New Amazon SageMaker Infrastructure Innovations were announced today:

  • Training Compiler – accelerate model training by 50%
  • Inference Recommender – reduce time to deploy from weeks to hours
  • Serverless Inference – lower cost of ownership with pay per use pricing

8. Amazon Kendra Experience Builder

Amazon Kendra Experience Builder

Amazon Kendra Experience Builder was launched into general availability today enabling AWS customers to deploy intelligent enterprise search applications with Amazon Kendra with just a few clicks.

9. Amazon Lex Automated Chatbot Designer

Amazon Lex Automated Chatbot Designer was launched into preview today.  This new tool drastically simplifies chat bot design with advanced natural language understanding.

10. Amazon SageMaker Studio Lab

Amazon SageMaker Studio Lab

Amazon SageMaker Studio Lab was launched into preview today.  Studio Lab offers no cost, no setup access to powerful machine learning technology.  Studio Lab is available with easy email sign up through a web browser, where users can gain access to ML tools, frameworks and libraries.  Users benefit from persistent sessions with 15GB of free long term storage.  They can also migrate projects to SageMaker Studio for production in one simple step.

11. AWS AI & ML Scholarship Program

AWS AI & ML Scholarship Program

The final announcement of today’s keynote was the AWS AI & ML Scholarship Program. AWS are offering $10m per year in scholarships .  Students will have access to free trsaining modules and tutorials on the basics of machine learning.   This initiative is part of the AWS commitment to train 29 million people with cloud skills by 2025.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that the world of data and data analytics is exploding with the volume of data being generated increasing exponentially.  Amazon has the broadest service portfolio in the data analytics and machine learning arena, and with the annoucement of of these new services and initiatives today, that portfolio just continues to grow and evolve.
