Executive Summary
A Scandinavian environmental software company serving the Oil & Gas industry wanted independent assessment of their AWS infrastructure before committing to further investment. The platform had been built incrementally with no formal architectural review, and growing ESG compliance pressure made the gap increasingly material. Logicata conducted a full six-pillar Well-Architected Framework Review with automated discovery tooling, identifying High and Medium Risk issues and producing a prioritised remediation roadmap that directly seeded the next engagement (a WAF deployment).
Customer Overview
Sector: Environmental Technology (CleanTech)
Location: Scandinavia
The customer develops environmental reporting software and consultancy services for the Oil & Gas industry, helping operators achieve ESG compliance, ISO 14001 and 14031 certification, and net-zero emissions targets. Their SaaS platform runs on AWS using Elastic Beanstalk, CloudFront, and API Gateway across separate development and production environments.
The Challenge
The platform had grown faster than the architectural assurance around it:
- No independent review. Infrastructure had been built incrementally without formal architectural assessment.
- Growing compliance requirements. ESG and environmental regulations demanded confidence in platform reliability and security. Self-attestation was not enough.
- Legacy components. Classic Load Balancers and older configurations persisted alongside newer services, blurring the picture.
- Limited visibility. The team was not sure whether the existing architecture could scale with their growing customer base.
- Security posture unknown. No formal assessment against AWS security best practices, no defensible record to point at when investors or compliance asked.
The Solution
Logicata conducted a formal AWS Well-Architected Framework Review across all six pillars:
- Scoping call (30 minutes) to identify the workload, key stakeholders, and arrange access for the automated tooling
- Automated discovery using AWS Service Screener and IaC Analyser to generate objective findings before the workshop, so the discussion started from data rather than opinion
- 4-hour workshop reviewing the workload against all six pillars: Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimisation, and Sustainability
- Formal report highlighting every identified High Risk and Medium Risk issue, each with a suggested remediation plan
- Prioritisation meeting to review findings and agree the remediation roadmap
Why all six pillars rather than two or three
For a SaaS platform facing compliance pressure on multiple fronts, a focused review can miss the connecting tissue. ESG reporting touches Operational Excellence (incident response) and Reliability (data integrity). Customer trust touches Security and Performance Efficiency. Cost touches all of them through the run-rate. The six-pillar shape made the trade-offs visible.
Results
- Comprehensive assessment against all six AWS Well-Architected pillars
- High and Medium Risk Issues identified with actionable remediation plans
- Prioritised roadmap so the customer could address the most critical items first
- Automated tooling outputs (Service Screener, IaC Analyser) provided as reference data for the customer’s own ongoing checks
- Directly informed the next engagement (AWS WAF deployment, the highest-priority remediation item)
- Customer gained confidence in the platform’s strengths and clarity on the gaps that mattered
