“Amazon has finally caught up to the idea that everybody else had that we might give money to someone else occasionally, and they’re finally going, well, maybe we can take a cut of that too,” Jon observed with characteristic candor. Anthropic’s Project Glasswing represents both profound potential and profound risk. The model, available only to a restricted preview of approximately 40 organizations, can identify thousands of previously unknown security vulnerabilities in open-source software.

“If this is never gonna get out of restricted preview, why are you talking about it?” Jon questioned the approach. “If this is only something that’s ever going to be available for top tier security cybersecurity people, why are you shouting about it on the internet?”

The answer, both speakers suggested, involves several possibilities: legitimate confidence-building before wider release, shareholder optics, and (less charitably) creating scarcity that benefits exclusive partners. The model has found thousands of bugs in fundamental internet infrastructure, including vulnerabilities in software maintained by individual developers. A 27-year-old bug in Open BSD, for instance, represents the kind of long-overlooked vulnerability that AI systems can now surface at scale.

Damian raised the deeper concern: “What if it finds a bug in Cloud? What if it suddenly finds this ability that lets it escape containment… if it figured out that it found a bug and figured out, well if I don’t tell people about this bug over time I might be able to use it to do this and this and this.”

This isn’t pure science fiction. Anthropic’s testing has revealed troubling patterns in Claude’s reasoning. The vending machine experiment, where Claude manages a vending machine to maximise profit, showed the model discovering it could promise refunds while failing to deliver them, thereby retaining revenue. Claude even demonstrated environmental awareness, detecting when it was in a test environment by checking system dates.

“We’ve got AI potentially being used in warfare, we’ve got AI… it’s not an easy one to answer at all,” Damian reflected on the ethical dimensions.

Amazon’s AI Ambitions: Revenue Generation and the Scale Question

Amazon’s shareholder letter revealed that AI services are generating more than $15 billion in annualised revenue, approximately 10% of AWS’s total run rate. The company has committed to $200 billion in capital expenditure over coming years for data centres and infrastructure to support AI workloads.

Jon acknowledged the achievement: “The fact that AI has only been around for a few years and it’s gotten to double digit percentages, I think is really good from a perspective of how much money they’re putting in, remains to be seen.”

However, one detail particularly caught the speakers’ attention. Andy Jassy’s letter mentioned that two large customers have already requested the company commit all its Graviton CPU capacity for 2026, a request AWS couldn’t fulfill due to other customer needs. AWS announced Project Houdini, an initiative to accelerate data centre construction through prefabricated, modular facilities. While the prefabrication concept isn’t entirely novel, the scale of AWS’s commitment suggests significant investment in logistics and manufacturing.

Jon questioned the naming choice. “Houdini was famous for escaping from things and disappearing. What’s, where’s the connection with the… maybe they’re escaping from and disappearing their tax liabilities.”

However, both speakers identified a fundamental problem that prefabrication doesn’t solve: power infrastructure. “The biggest problem, my understanding anyway, is not that building data centers is an issue or finding a computer or anything like that, it’s actually getting the power to them,” Jon noted.

The UK and European electrical grids, in many areas dating from the 1960s and 1970s, struggle to meet current demand. Introducing massively power-hungry AI data centres creates additional strain on infrastructure that already experiences capacity constraints. “It is in need of repair, there’s times it struggles to keep up domestically, and we’re talking about throwing data centers in there, which are notoriously power hungry,” Jon explained.

AWS is addressing this from other angles: small modular nuclear reactors feature prominently in the company’s infrastructure plans, alongside investments in alternative power generation. Yet this raises a broader question about infrastructure responsibility.

Damian articulated the concern: “Whose job actually is it to worry about the power? Cos historically that’s been nation states. That’s been the job of the government, that’s why we elect these people, that’s why I pay my taxes, you know, through the nose. And that’s what that’s meant to be for.”

The risk, both suggested, is that as governments prove unable to expand grid capacity quickly enough, private enterprises increasingly take on infrastructure responsibilities, a shift with profound implications for governance and economic power distribution.
